Obi Toppin actually had some really good and creative dunks. It’s just that he didn’t slam them hard enough. The impact of the dunks were too soft so the crowd couldn’t appreciate them
Got to feel bad for Obi Toppin. His dunks werent bad at all but got no reaction due to the lack of star power in this years contest and how much everyone else was missing so much... He needs to comeback next year and hope that a star does it aswell so he's not the only one
My ideas to fix all star weekend (1 for each event or possible adds) 1. get rid of the moneyball rack in the 3pt contest... yes its cool to see shooters score a bunch of points but it kills the chance of a comeback if someone misses there moneyballs and someone makes all theres. leave the 5th ball money balls but the rack is to much and getting rid of it in my option makes the scores closer. 2. stop with the guard vs guard and bigs vs big in the skills contest... honestly this isnt that big of a deal but i just feel like anyone vs anyone would make it more interesting and wouldnt limit the amount of guards or bigs that can participate. 3. The dunk contest needs a lot of work right now, from the weak contenders to the overuse of props. What the league needs to do is either add charity money to it and makes it to where the charity that the winner selects gets a idk maybe 500k donation or someone like that, it worked out for the all star game maybe it will increase the amount of star power the dunk contest gets... 4. If they dont plan on changing anything to the dunk contest what they need to do to save all star weekend is give the fans what they want... a 1v1 tournament, realistically i cant see this being that crazy after the 3rd year since most of the stars will have already competed if any do, but still it would help take a lot of the pressure off the dunk contest as the main attraction... also give it some kind of prize pool aswell to get people to compete more that once if at all... 5. something that would be very easy to add that the fans might not care for but the players might is make logos for the the events and let the winner were it on there jersey for the year as bragging rights... some examples of this would be the C for captain on the NFL jerseys or the nba trophy on the defending champs jerseys, MAYBE even give them a title belt that they can have until the very next event and if they want to keep it they have to defend it, because lets be honest title belts are some of the coolest things ever and who wouldnt want to be known as the dunk contest champion or 3pt contest champion
I think another thing would be better than the celebrity game would be an old man's pick up. Get retired legends to lace up, obviously they wouldn't be as action packed, and make former players the refs as well. I would think seeing AI ref a pick up with Shaq, Barkley, and maybe idk tim Duncan would be funny.
To make the contest more interesting they should compile a list of the best dunkers throughout the year and let the fans vote for who should compete in the contest.
In 2016, Gordon and Lavin reached the maximum point in class, in the skill schedule. After that, there was a decline. Slam Dunk Contest 2022 peaked at its lowest point.
Yes, they should have practiced the dunks before the dunk contest. They would have not missed these many especially if one is not known for being a dunker.
I missed this live, but watching just the highlights, this dunk contest wasn't that bad. The problem is that we have been spoiled by so many great dunks in the past that even spectacular dunks aren't that exciting to see anymore. If these dunks were performed 30 years ago, they would bring down the house.
It not that....it's that they all took damn near 10-15 attempts to finally accomplish the dunk. Watch the full dunk contest and you'll see why the excitement was drained out the stadium
I've yet to see anyone do a behind the back under the legs dunk. I feel like Obi could hit that dunk the way he did that behind the back in the first round. He definitely had the hang time to get a quick under the legs, obviously he wouldn't be able to dunk over a person while doing it.
Good effort by the guys. Unfortunately… the dunk contest doesn’t have the same interest anymore. This didn’t have the same spark since Lavin and Gordon
Dude you’re high. Obi dunks were way better than A LOT of past winners. Go actually look at some of the past winners and you’ll change that attitude reak quick
Obi Toppin has the athleticism and hops to be amazing, he just needs some creativity. It'll never be anyone really beyond their 4th-5th year in anymore, too much risk for a fan service show. Love to see an off the board mid air catch air jordan from free throw line. Or the coveted 360 free throw line jam.
I miss the early 2000s. It seemed like dunkers back then got up easier and had more hang time. Allowing for them to finish their dunks. And I think after Zach and Aaron Gordon we've pretty much seen all that is humanly capable for a dunker, so all that is left is for someone to basically defy the laws of physics in order for us to be wowed. Or at least jump from 3 feet from behind the free throw line and do a 360 windmill while in the air . They'd have to get their chest rim level, on a few dunks possibly even flip in the air before dunking. Anything less is something we've already seen before.
This actually had some pretty good dunks it’s just it got ruined by a lot of misses and a very bad final round. Juan and obi’s first dunks were actually very impressive they both should’ve gotten 50s
@VK I've been saying since before Blake Griffin began the jumping over props hype that they haven't had new dunks. (Come on world, it was the hood, not even as impressive as whoever dunked over Kevin Hart!) They need to get rid of the contest, or change it to x number contestants and the rounds are iconic past champion dunks. Draw one out and each guy does the same dunk, worst effort or a miss and you're out. Next round!
I’ve never seen so many failed dunk attempts in a dunk contest before. It’s gotten to the point every year we see the same things over and over it haven’t been exciting since the one with Zack Lavine VS Aaron Gordon. This year should of had Ja Morant and Anthony Edwards in it along with Zion Williams if he was healthy but other then that it’s got pretty boring to the point they need to move on and come up with something else.
It's time they bring in the PRO dunkers for this event.. I mean the Real dunkers out there.. non NBA players who dunk for the living.. and put a show for them . Those guys have taken over the show anyway
That was a good contest alot of stuff was difficult, especially toppins last dunk that takes some good timing and skill don't sleep on this contest!...
Judges tougher then I've ever seen. That dunk Green did that went in-between the legs then reverse dunked one handed more then deserved a 50 Ridiculous!
@M S im not sure why do you still bother with the comment if thats your mindset.. in the first place, why do you still watch NBA when its getting dumber.. either you are an stupid jerk or a plain PTSD survivor
@Edward Except the NBA moves backwards in dunk contests, ratings, skillset, physicality, defense etc. Or maybe you think Tekashi is a better rapper than Tupac too?🤣 Tell us you was born after 2005 without telling us.
@bron lebron hey hey oldies, get over with that old shit.. aaron and zach is the best dunk contest ever.. The best dunkers the league has seen. we move forward not backwards
I would like to make a proposal maybe y'all can expand on this. The dunk contest could be scraped for good or we can have it every 2 years or 3 years which would allow for breathing space of talent and dunking ideas to come about. Aside from that, what can be an added in the future would be a 1 on 1 contest. Here you can have 8 guys compete and basically like the knockout flows from quaters to semi and final, these 8 guys would be paired up and each pair will have have a one on one match up on one side of thw court . The first one to reach say ten points wins and advances to the next round. Why 10 point cause i think its short enough and it really doesnt fatigue them. Alternatively instead of that, a set time can be given, say 2 or 4 minutes and by the end whoever scores the highest wins. A 1 on 1 contest can be exciting as one can see some drama, skill on display, egos and dominance tussles, dunks and maybe even ankle breaks. Its just a thought and maybe the people in the comment section and maybe the NBA themselves can ponder on this. ✌
We have become spoiled by great athletes. The fact that and off the backboard under your leg windmill dunk is considered trash is crazy. Expectations are too high. Michael and Dominique couldn’t do 1/2 these dunks
97 is easily the most trash contest of all time. The format sucked, the judging sucked and the dunks sucked. It was so ass backward that Darvin Ham had the most powerful dunks in the first round, had the single most creative dunk and was the only contestant that stuck all of his dunks. Yet the judges gave him one of the lowest scores.
@Dallas Texas That's the difference.. before you were allowed like i think 2 tries, and if you miss one your score's deducted.. now if you miss 10 times and make 1 you can still potentially get a 50. Aiite maybe I exaggerated a bit, but you get my point.
@Arsenio Buck and who is suppose to be vince Carter in this year's dunk contest? You want the crowd to get hype over a basic ass Toscano or Obi dunk? Over a Green miss? Even if the crowd was hype that doesn't change the fact these dunks fucking suck and that the biggest name here is a struggling rookie. Crowd isn't the problem it's obviously the contestants
@Arsenio Buck That is true. Ticket costs have become so high that your regular working class folk can't afford them. The working class knew how to make noise, the rich folk just treat the game as a day out and you see a lot of females just staring at their phones. But I think the crowd would have been more hyped if big name players weren't scared of entering the dunk contest. But you're right, crowds today do not bring the same energy crowds in the 80s and 90s did
Honestly, they should bring street players into this contest. It's going to be much more impressive than those wannabe "superstars" that haven't done anything yet but behave like GOAT.
to be fair some of the dunks Toppin did are exactly the kind of technical dunks Kilganon & Co are doing. Those tap the backboard first then dunk it are very popular among pro dunkers at the moment
in a league that emphasizes shooting 3s, you're not gonna have players that work on their poster dunks. Vince, MJ and Lavine posterized / posterize players in game
I think they need to focus a little less on the flashy trick and more on a powerful finish. It would also be helpful if for the dunk contest the NBA made the rims more bouncy like they used to be
@PG 13PACERNATION Toppin dunks are extremely difficult. Among the most difficult ever. The problem is that it has no style, unlike lavine for example. Otherwise the green dunk (inverted 360 between the legs) deserved better. He had to go to the final.
I think the ambience is a key factor in the success of a dunk contest. Back in 2016, there was so much energy in that arena, but partially because All-Star Weekend was being held in Toronto. If you think back, that was Drake’s breakout year. But the league also looked a lot different so we were able to enjoy things more. Pre-Covid, Pre-Trump, Kobe was still alive. Believe it or not I believe that extraneous circumstances do play a part in our ability to enjoy things. Make no mistake, I do feel like the athleticism and creativity was missing from this year’s Dunk Contest. Zach Lavine and Aaron Gordon didn’t really need props and they also dunked with a certain finesse that we weren’t seeing with these contestants.
Because these guys ALL MISSED dunks like 4 5 6 times in a row lol...zach lavine n Aaron Gordon weren't stars at that time they became stars through the contest
the dunk contest needs to have some kind of "golden buzzer", in case a dunk is exceptionally above 50, and that buzzer should only be used once per round.
NBA: "I would like you to be a judge for the NBA dunk contest, and we'd love it if you come back each year. There's pros and cons of doing it though. Pro is, we pay really well. Con is the dunks will get worse each year."
dunk contest has seriously regressed since the days of ZachLavine, AaronGordon, D12, Nate, JasonRichardson, GeraldGreen, Derozan, JR, VinceCarter, MJ, Nique,
@Timothy Brown true, but as far as a collective inspirational event. Aaron v Lavine was IMO, the second-best event ever for a dunk contest. But it stops there. MJvNique, they gave it to you their entire career! big difference! That's the issue with today and for a long time actually. STAR PLAYERS need to go into the contest. Giannis vs LeBron or something or that kid from Minnesota #1 with those John Carter Mars hops vs. Lamelo Ball [If he had hops] ...you can build on that much better. Because the hype will carry outside of the dunk contest. The reason why people were so happy about Aaron v Lavine, people were craving for that and they got t by surprise! which was awesome!
I really miss Aaron Gordon, he deserves to win at least one title.
true
.,nah Gordon says im not gana do it again,,
He got robbed
he was the baddest...Zack too...
@disla ☆
This dunk contest is a embrassment to all the great legends that performed at unbelievable levels.
still better than korean lmao
Its worse than the 2001 dunk contest
u said that
it seems like not stepping up at all right?
its true
@Z • Exactly what I just said.
It’s al been done… only so many ways to dunk a basketball… time to cancel it
I hope people are starting to appreciate how amazing the zach lavine and aaron gordon contest was, it has never been the same since
Yes, Zach lavine is the best
Obi Toppin actually had some really good and creative dunks. It’s just that he didn’t slam them hard enough. The impact of the dunks were too soft so the crowd couldn’t appreciate them
Yes, at least, there was creativity in the dunk. Unlike the traditional windmill dunks.
@Shannon Kamal Are u high..
I wanna hear the rim clank!!
He also didn’t even dribble and is lanky so it just looks awkward
@Shannon Kamal you new to this or?
Got to feel bad for Obi Toppin. His dunks werent bad at all but got no reaction due to the lack of star power in this years contest and how much everyone else was missing so much... He needs to comeback next year and hope that a star does it aswell so he's not the only one
He sucked
I saw JTA play for my Soles de Mexicali back in 2018. Now he’s in the Nba Slam dunk contest! Nothing but mad respect for him.
My ideas to fix all star weekend (1 for each event or possible adds)
1. get rid of the moneyball rack in the 3pt contest... yes its cool to see shooters score a bunch of points but it kills the chance of a comeback if someone misses there moneyballs and someone makes all theres. leave the 5th ball money balls but the rack is to much and getting rid of it in my option makes the scores closer.

I would think seeing AI ref a pick up with Shaq, Barkley, and maybe idk tim Duncan would be funny.
The contest level was too low comparing with others, but this dunk was insane 3:34
You forgot 2020 bro
Yes, they should have practiced the dunks before the dunk contest. They would have not missed these many especially if one is not known for being a dunker.
2016 was my favorite
You don't "peak" at a low.
@Paul Portell well as I said Blake Griffin was rigged to win it from the start, because he was a rising star at the time
I missed this live, but watching just the highlights, this dunk contest wasn't that bad. The problem is that we have been spoiled by so many great dunks in the past that even spectacular dunks aren't that exciting to see anymore. @Still Chillin Yeah, that does ruin it.
It not that....it's that they all took damn near 10-15 attempts to finally accomplish the dunk. Watch the full dunk contest and you'll see why the excitement was drained out the stadium
Dr J always always looks good! He understands the assignment every time.
I miss when there's actually a dunk that will make me jump out of my chair or like have an actual reaction... I miss Aaron Gordon and Zach smh...
Vince carter set the bar
Obi s dunk is aestetically good, but it lacks one thing... POWER! Powerful dunks electrify the crowds
HAHA dunk contest has been dead for years. Now it's popularity as a product is trash that everyone can make fun of.
Dude you’re high. Obi dunks were way better than A LOT of past winners. Go actually look at some of the past winners and you’ll change that attitude reak quick
@Yon Solo they don’t want to do it because it’s all already been done
A layup dunk?!😮🤯He deserved to win it.
After watching this, I need to watch some Vince Carter to remind myself what a dunk contest is.
rofl
Sem dúvidas o pior torneio de interradas da história da NBA chegou a ser patético
Loving the love for Aaron and Zach ❤️
Shaq's reaction says it all 😂😂
2:43 is gunna be used for memes
they are boring🤣🤣🤣
Shaq was thinking of Vince
Yep 2:42
He was waving to the crowd in the end like he deserved it.
I almost fell asleep watching it! Nothing creative! Very deceptive Contest!
Concurso de volcadas eran los de antes, nunca van a superar el espectáculo de Gordon y Lavigne
They'd have to get their chest rim level, on a few dunks possibly even flip in the air before dunking. Anything less is something we've already seen before.
We need pro dunkers like chris livingston, Jordan Clark, Jordan Kilganon, Guy Dupuy, Isaiah Rivera
Each year, judges become more desensitized by these incredible dunks to the point where everything becomes a DWade 9 score. Now, it's just 8s and 7s.
This actually had some pretty good dunks it’s just it got ruined by a lot of misses and a very bad final round. Juan and obi’s first dunks were actually very impressive they both should’ve gotten 50s
The misses and poor quality of dunks and seeing the same old routine is what's making the dunk contest so much fun to make fun of.
Best dunk contest ever. Thanks for all the performances
Weird All-Star year... the Skill Challenge was WAY more interesting than the Slam Dunk-Contest 🤣🤣
Sad but true, man ...
@VK I've been saying since before Blake Griffin began the jumping over props hype that they haven't had new dunks.
(Come on world, it was the hood, not even as impressive as whoever dunked over Kevin Hart!)
They need to get rid of the contest, or change it to x number contestants and the rounds are iconic past champion dunks. Draw one out and each guy does the same dunk, worst effort or a miss and you're out. Next round!
agree
Ya they broke all-star weekend completely. Woke only knows how to destroy.
Ya 4 people? Wtf? It used to be 8 or more. Weird.
The layup contest was a great addition to the 2022 All star game
DLK
That was a good contest alot of stuff was difficult, especially toppins last dunk that takes some good timing and skill don't sleep on this contest!...
great to see that the dunk contest was won by a layup
😂 😂 😂
Lol
@Happy Hepi he missed like 90000000000000.000000000000.000000000000.0000000000.00000000.0000000.000000.00000.0000.000.00.0 dunks
@Arsene Lupin true ay
Should do a layup contest instead of a dunk contest next year
VC15 from 20 years ago is still the most epic of all time!
When will we have the hype back again like the ones while watching Aaron Gordon, Dwight Howard?
Damnn son. I miss zach and Aaron rivalry. Best dunk of this era for sure.
Judges tougher then I've ever seen. That dunk Green did that went in-between the legs then reverse dunked one handed more then deserved a 50 Ridiculous!
One thing missing is POWER
The tap dunks really take away from the overall effect
Jason Richardson was the last powerful dunker in the contest
@[HFH] Haters Incorporated Official not anymore. Zach vs Aaron tops it
It's the first time that the three point shoot out became more interesting to watch than the dunk contest lmao 🤣🚶
2:42 Shaq's reaction says it all lol
Collectively they shot about 30% from the field in the dunk contest. This was easily top 5 worst dunk contests of all time.
This felt like I was practicing alley OOP dunks in 2k
We have become spoiled by great athletes. The fact that and off the backboard under your leg windmill dunk is considered trash is crazy. Expectations are too high. Michael and Dominique couldn’t do 1/2 these dunks
They need to start practicing routines with pro dunkers like J Clark the Jumper, Jordan Kilganon, Tyler Curie, and Jordan Southerland
Hell after so many great dunks over the years, we’ve pretty much seen it all. The dunk contest be ass now 😂😂
Kudos to the person who was able to extract "highlights" from this dunk contest.
😭
DISAPPOINTMENT!!!
Haha, exacly xD
Lmao 😂
I agree, the worst ever by far
The creativity is good, but the "slam" in the slam dunk is what we need.
the most underwhelming dunk contest ever😭
This should've had Zion, Ja Morant, Hell even LBJ would've been way more interesting.
Lbj won't do the dunk contest
This was more of a beauty pageant than a dunk contest!
Definitely the most disastrous dunk contest ever, can’t figure out which one was more trash than this year lol
The year they changed the rules because it took Nate Robinson like 100 tries to do his dunk was pretty bad
Nate robinson 20-30 attends at a dunks kol. Easy choice but there are plenty worse.
@Dallas Texas That's the difference.. before you were allowed like i think 2 tries, and if you miss one your score's deducted.. now if you miss 10 times and make 1 you can still potentially get a 50. Aiite maybe I exaggerated a bit, but you get my point.
When fred jones won
Gordon and lavine set the bar so high, it's gonna take a while to reach them
Shaq 2000- Standing up all contest, camcorder in hand, making the 😲 face like he seen a ghost
Shaq 2022- 😒😒😒 "Should I start the car?"
Gordon and lavine was in another level 🎚️
They should enter one outside the league hoopster, per dunk contest. It would probably make it a little more interesting. 😉
Slam Dunk contest is so hit or miss. I think the crowd’s reaction (or lack thereof) pretty much sums up this year’s contest.
@Arsenio Buck crowd sucks cuz the players suck lol nobody is jumping out their seats for these weak ass dunks
I STILL GIVE ANOTHER CHANCE TO REALLY PROVE HIMSELF THAT HE GOT THEM HOPS WITH HANG TIIIIIIIMMMMEEE
Man I actually feel good dunking on a toddler hoop lol
Best dunker of the last two decades: Aaron Gordon. Period.
J-Rich was doing a great job too...
Shaq’s reaction says it all! Once you’ve seen dunkers like Jordan Kilganon in person it becomes a very tough act to follow.
kilganon has no power
Cause that’s literally ALL they do, plus he’s shorter so it looks more impressive, and he’s white which makes it even more so. Obi killed it.
@2Swift4u but Kilganon and other pro dunkers does it better
to be fair some of the dunks Toppin did are exactly the kind of technical dunks Kilganon & Co are doing. Those tap the backboard first then dunk it are very popular among pro dunkers at the moment
Now i know what lavine did its very very difficult dunk. Pure dunk without props
I remember when jumping over tacko only gave 48 and now an ordinary Jump gets 50
Non of this dunk contest will ever beat Zach Levine's and Aaron Gordon's face off.
Woah full of windmill very unique dunks
Behind the back over a player🔥🔥💯💯
in a league that emphasizes shooting 3s, you're not gonna have players that work on their poster dunks. Vince, MJ and Lavine posterized / posterize players in game
1st center to win a 3 point shootout. Amazing
I think they need to focus a little less on the flashy trick and more on a powerful finish. It would also be helpful if for the dunk contest the NBA made the rims more bouncy like they used to be
Damn! this dunk contest was embrassing
@Derrick Rider. 我都覺今年入樽比賽已變得多餘
今年的真的不知道要表演甚麼...
@Riccardo Cascio my english is bad lol
embarrassing*
@PG 13PACERNATION Toppin dunks are extremely difficult. Among the most difficult ever. The problem is that it has no style, unlike lavine for example. Otherwise the green dunk (inverted 360 between the legs) deserved better. He had to go to the final.
It's over. It's over ladies and gentleman. The Dunk Contest is finally over we can go home now. 🤣
Vince Carter 22 years ago was the height of dunking
Can we get some guys who actually know how to dunk next year?
3:28 could’ve been the best thing
They really need stars to join this contest there really is no hype even in the crowds
That crowd was embarrassing. They should sell tickets to actual fans and not just hand them out to influencers.
@Sky Pham exactly. They don't tear down the rim like Kemp, Dominique, Pippen, Barkley, Drexler and Jordan
Stars these day can’t dunk.. they can only shoot 3s
We miss you Gordon 💔
Aaron Gordon punching the air with this one.
These Dunkers in this year’s 2022 Slam Dunk Contest, were softer than fresh baked cookies 🍪.
Aaron Gordon would of won this easily against these guys👌
The saddest dunk competition of all time.
@TROLL KING hahahahahahaha
That would be 97.
@Steven ask your mom
S.O.A.T.!
@Steven did you watch it
I feel like no one can top lavin and gordon ever
What happens when you watch old dunk reels and think you're better than them 🤣
They should use the same lighting as the previous dunk contests in the early 2000s, will add to the suspense..
I LIKE THAT GUY MADE IT THE FIRST ATTEMPT THAT WAS A REAL NICE DUNK BRO ITS VERY HARD TO MAKE THAT WITH BEST TIMING U HERD
Wow, at this point i would invite Jordan Kilganon and other professional dunkers. That would be way more fun to watch.
@Christoph Graus- thats 1 hell of an idea.
the dunk contest needs to have some kind of "golden buzzer", in case a dunk is exceptionally above 50, and that buzzer should only be used once per round.
Aaron Gordon still d' best dunker!!!
The first dunk contest without a single poor score of 50😔
NBA: "I would like you to be a judge for the NBA dunk contest, and we'd love it if you come back each year. There's pros and cons of doing it though. Pro is, we pay really well. Con is the dunks will get worse each year."
even without any participation NBA must deliver the trophy to Aron Gordon
2016 was a gem of Dunk COntest
Let’s face it, as underwhelming as it was this year most of these dunks would have won in the 80’s
The main issue with the dunk contest is that expectations from fans are way too high. What else can a guy do after years of highlight reel dunks.
Best dunk contest in nba history
Lavine and Gordon set the bar so high these guys have to step it up
This contest should to be cancelled. It seems today like a funny afternoon meeting in a gang neighbourhood street court
dunk contest has seriously regressed since the days of ZachLavine, AaronGordon, D12, Nate, JasonRichardson, GeraldGreen, Derozan, JR, VinceCarter, MJ, Nique,
NBA Slum Dank involving Zach Lavine and Aaron Gordon is still the Best !!!
@A S l agree Vince Carter was off the charts.
No doubt
Maybe in the best in the 2010s but not the best, very good but not the best, way better than the last 3 or 4 dunk contest for sure
Gordon is just so unlucky having dunk contest against zach..
