What I learned from Simply Naillogical is that cream paint eats the glitter/holo, so adding it into a normal paint will kill most of it. If you would like more to be visible on the wall don't put it in the paint itself, put it on with a clear base as an extra layer, this way you have more control over how much you want to see it... :)

Im literally dead at yall trying to argue about wall paint vs nail polish. They are quite literally not the same. At all. Like not even close. There are also 826294 different kinds of paint with all different properties. Because they have different purposes. The problem with doing a clear coat is it will quite literally look like a top coat of glitter. Mixing it into opaque paint will give just a hit of sparkle to the paint itself. 2 completely different looks for 2 completely different goals. Bringing it back to nail polish, there is a reason you can get sparkles in a clear polish or in a colored polish and they give totally different looks. But they are formulated to do that. The difference with polish vs paint is it is a lacquer applied in really really thin layers.

@Mackenzie Burgess it’s probably really dependent on the kind of glitter you use.

    • Kimmaline
      Kimmaline 4 ай бұрын +13

@Mackenzie Burgess I'm an artist, who has been messing around with this for the last year and a bit. I am currently using it on two different large projects, and what I have found is that if you use it with a semi-gloss or eggshell paint, let it cure, and then VERY lightly go over the surface, you can knock a lot of the paint off of the ultra smooth surface of the individual flecks of glitter. Depending on your project, everything from a sanding block to a Magic Eraser to a washcloth can work--I actually went from feeling like the wood in one project had an unfortunate skin condition to needing to start over because I revealed too much glitter.
Clear coat with glitter tends to work in nail polish because it is typically a lacquer, which is so fundamentally different from paint in almosy every way it's almost weird to compare them, except that superficially they seem nearly identical. Paint or clear topcoats for walls or other projects, however, won't have as much gloss shine as the glitter itself does, so it will generally really mess with the glitter and the overall sparkle effect.

My grandma loved pink and shiny things, so in both their houses my grandpa used a machine to blow glitter into the plaster on the ceilings before it dried. I always thought it was such a romantic gesture to bring joy to the one he loved. Also in their house in town, both the living and dining room were a bold pink. I used to want a pink house and would say if a man wasn't secure enough in his masculinity to let me have a pink house, he wasn't the one for me.

Hi Mia! I’m a contractor in the Seattle area and it’s great that you’re taking renovations in your own hands! I would too. One thing though; matte tiles for the shower wall aren’t the best for cleaning. That’s why polished tiles are recommended. Love your videos! 💜

Here's a bit of really good advice that you should take:
I can PROMISE you, that her tiles will be popping off the old tiles underneath, especially because they didn't even do anything to rough up the surface of the old tiles.
Save yourself money and time by taking the old tiles off. You'll be much happier because your tiles won't be coming loose or popping off in a year or two ( IF they last that long ).

@Addie1) Irregardless, it comes off looking like an instructional video because they're videoing a renovation.
      2) The technique that she's using is not the correct way to place tile.
Why are people taking offense to my critique of her video, yet saying NOTHING about this video showing people the incorrect way to lay tile?
This video has probably cost people money by doing an incorrect tile installation based on this video.

Most epoxy grouts have about the same "consistency" like cement based products.
Because they are not intendet to be used in private homes, but in heavy industry settings, or high chemical use.
Like dairies, pools, food industry in general.... so they have to be "anti slippery" for lack of a better word.
Its not the same epoxy as the one you would use for casting.

came looking for this comment! epoxy grout would be easier to clean too, right? because it would dry as a super-smooth glossy surface like the rest of the shower tiles.

Lol Miiaaaa the paint technique wasn't about the size of the roller ! You have to make a big zig zag across the wall with a freshly loaded roller and then re-roll over the enitre wall like you usually would. This helps distribute the paint better cause the roller picks up paint when it rolls over the first zigzag you made. Like so Mia can see!!! :)
Ps: I am obsessed with the glitter paint. Amazing makeover - as usual! ;)

    • Crystal Esposito
Crystal Esposito 5 ай бұрын +5

YOU ARE DOING AWSOME! yes, you also want to make sure afterdoing that you dont paint anything but left to right or vice versa TOP TO BOTTOM. If you paint it by no pogo onto the roller and you use the roller by hand your hands will crap you push to much of the paint in 1-2 spots causing a dripping effect as its pressing also it causes skippers. Also, NO MATTER WHAT after you do the big zig zag even with the smaller 9" roller always do side to side whichever way you choose i do r to l and never ever backwards also from TOP TO BOTTOM not half like top then come half down the wall to finish it from where your reach was to the bottom of the wall. if not you will definately have a line in the middle of your wall. I dont mean to say your not doing a great job BC YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB. Its literally my job my entire family are in construction through my father and I's co owned construction. My baby brother was A BEAST NEVER NEVER EVER CAN ANYONE IVE EVER SEEN OUT PAINT HIM :*( He passsed 2.5 yr ago also an owner sorry. Ive changed my paint in several different rooms adding glitter for about 15 yrs now. IT DONT NEED TO BE THOSE PACKS YOU CAN USE REG GLITTER AS LONG AS ITS NOT THE CHUNKS EXTREMELY FINE ID DO 1 COLOR PER WALL MAYBE AN ACCENT WALL FILLING IT WHILE 3/4 of a gal. not half that will make you run out sooner especially if your planning 2 finish with the roller bc you'd need to pour it into the rololing pan and it isnt really gonna distribute correctly. Also i would make sure to take the blue tape and just wrap it around the length of the actual fuzzy portioln of it and then just peel it off. *takes extra fuzz off of it and keeeps it form going on to the wall or worse stuck in the rolling pan. I'm sorry I co-owned and was working with my dad and brother. It was a general construction comp. just comes naturally. only hopes this can help someone making it cheap as possible and MOST OF ALL MAKE YOUR TIME AND WORK SO MUCH EASIER AND TIME EFFICIENT~

Mia, if you look at the giant paint roller TikToks again, you'll see that in both examples, the men made a W with the roller. This helps cover more wall space in a shorter period of time. I remember learning this on the original "Holmes on Holmes" with Mike Holmes. Being so involved with renovating homes, I know that you will have seen at least one of his many TV shows, lol!

I'll take a powered pump roller over the longer bar. We bought one when we were painting our house exterior and the up and down a ladder and/or waving a long pole through the air just wasn't going to be a thing. You hit a button to pump it from the bucket through a tube direct to the roller, and it oozes out from the roller, then you just zig zag it like normal to spread the paint.
ONLY down side was wasted paint /clean up from the big long tube rather than just a roller tray.
Pluses were no roller trays, no stooping or stopping to fill the roller, and you could just swap to the next bucket when you got to the bottom of the one you were using. Seriously, my hubby was using it while I cut in around the edges and he managed to do an entire 2 story house side in less time than it took me to get around 1 window and the sliding glass door.

Its to ALWAYS be painted over but to distribute paint wider. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS... Roll this out 1st ans and start on a "single side" making sure that you tape off any trim etc. U will come to that after the main rolling with a brush and feather it. Say left to right up and down not with tons of paint u want ABSOLUTELY NO "runners" or (drips) this is y the w shape helps u also do not ever need to press the roller from your hand against the wall it will do the work for you. Especially if u have good quality paint and yes rollers (u will want to take blie painters tape and literally tape the entire new roller itself to pull all extra fuzz off to keep it off the wall or anything your painting. Do not continue to go up amd down etc in one place it only wastes paint and most of all "TIME")

Metallic grout is exactly what it sounds like. Metallic grout is grout with a metallic, or metal-like, appearance. It can be considered as a designer, or boutique, grout color, and while it isn’t the right choice for every situation, it can certainly be used effectively in many different ways. The Tile Doctor offers the Starlike metallic grout color collection - a collection of unique metallic colors

Fun video! For future reference the sticky musselbound mat isn't recommended to be used for floors. I have a feeling it's probably because of the weight/pressure that floors take. The mat is going to allow the tile to move with the pressure and eventually crack. Seems like an awesome product for walls though!

I am an interior designer and I have built several homes. I currently work as a designer in a tile and flooring store that sells all the products you covered and needed. So I am coming from a place of real life experience and knowledge.
The double sided adhesive paper is intended for wall applications where there is limited water exposure. We mostly stick to just using them for kitchen backsplashes and accent walls in dry areas. They are not intended for walking on. It also looked like you applied the tile directly with mortar on top of the existing tile. They will likely fall off if moisture works its way in. On both the vinyl and the tile you could have used a roll on primer that would make it grip the mortar better. Also make sure that you caulk, not grout, the corners so they can flex to prevent cracking. As far as the glitter grout goes, adding the glitter definitely messed up the integrity of the grout mixture. They sell grout that already has the glitter in it. There is solid ones similar to what you created which is a fine aggregate. But the one on the TikTok is epoxy based which is why it is clear. You just need to move quickly with the epoxy because you can't buff it off like regular grout once it sets up. To finish the edging when using a harder to find tile you can use Schluter metal pieces. They come in a lot of colors and metal finishes so you can match them to your faucets or tile.
If you have a reno question I don't mind giving advice. I have been thinking about steering my channel in that direction more anyways.

I love that you covered all of the thoughts in my head. Also was thinking about how a lot of insects like certain paper glues. Also the danger of inhaling glitter that is mixed like that into the lungs. (I hope she wore a mask!) I was wondering if the glitter would also contribute to possible microbial growth or inhalation from shed (over time) if not finely enough ground; and like you said, mixed so that the integrity concentration would be accurate. Also wondering if VOC's would be worse with these products; but I guess you'd have to compare it to what would normally be used.

You literally covered all of the points I wanted to make. She'll realize all of the mistakes in time once the tiles start to loosen and the grout starts cracking. It's a bummer, but she'll be able to do it better next time. I also would add that matte tiles really aren't ideal for use in the shower.

Epoxy is exactly what I was thinking when she asked about something clear to grout it with. I know pretty much NOTHING about any of this stuff, but I did a very short pre-apprenticeship program when I was planning on becoming a tile apprentice, and that's one of the things we learned. Then COVID happened, and I never got back to it.

@CrazyOldCatLady uhhh as far as hardware/DIY stores, you should be. maybe not all hardware stores are equal but I used to work at a Lowe's and I was taught everything this designer is saying and noticed a couple other glaring things in the video. always talk to a sales floor associate when you're rennovating and ask them any questions you have before assuming they won't know, they interact with contractors all day, were trained by people usually working in the business for years, and some even go to training demos for the products.

Hi there 👋🏽 My dad paints houses & renovates as a lead contractor. When you’re painting with a roller, don’t PUSH the roller into the wall. Glide it over the wall and the paint lasts a lot longer. When you push, it pushes further into the roller and soaks it up and ends up drying out faster!
Just thought this might help with future projects!

6:30 The rollers are specially designed, the stiffer part goes at the front, dispensing the paint better, the looser part (without support) goes at the back, smoothing the whole thing and preventing the formation of smudges.

It looks so much brighter and bigger, and I love that bird faucet 😍 The peel and stick flooring, seems very convenient. I'm definitely going to look into that.
I've been wondering about glitter paint. Does it come off after it dries, even years down the road? Like.. if you rub your hand on it, or bump into it, will the glitter come off? 🤔

    • Sarah Jevons
      Sarah Jevons 5 ай бұрын

The glitter doesn’t rub off, I have had it for 10 years and it hasn’t rubbed off the wall, dependent on the paint used when scrubbing it would come off. Bathroom and kitchen paint that is scrubbable would reduce the coming off of the glitter if in high traffic area

    • R Alexandra

The peel and stick adhesive is meant for walls- and isn’t good for flooring. For two reasons. 1- it’s too flexible, and the pressure/weight of people walking on the tile will cause the grout to crack and fall out- or worse, the tiles will crack and break.
And 2. The adhesive mats are not good for areas exposed to moisture- the moisture can cause the adhesive to fail.
You’d be way better off applying tile flooring with traditional tile adhesive- as it will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. . I know the sheets seem like a time/effort saver but they’ll ultimately cost you more when the sheets prematurely fail and you have to redo the floor in the future.

@Code Name Maybe some people want a house designed by a baby Disney princess, ever thought about that? It's sad how we lose creativity as we age, especially in home decor. Everyone's houses end up looking the same. Live in a space you love, not what others deem respectable or "right".

Fun video! For future reference the sticky musselbound mat isn't recommended to be used for floors. I have a feeling it's probably because of the weight/pressure that floors take. The mat is going to allow the tile to move with the pressure and eventually crack. Seems like an awesome product for walls though!

    • R Alexandra
      R Alexandra 5 ай бұрын

It’s also not ideal for areas that are exposed to a lot of moisture. It may save time in the short term- but will ultimately be more costly (time and money) when the entire floor needs to be redone because the adhesive mat failed.

    • CreoleFaerie
      CreoleFaerie 5 ай бұрын +1

@Ashley Frasca wall tile is actually easier than floor tile! Hanging something is actually less surface pressure than walking on it. When you hang it on a wall, the only real pressure is the gravitational pull of the tile which is just a few pounds. Floors have to take on more weight because people walk on it. This means if your floor is uneven (which is common) you have to level the floor before laying down any tile or it can crack with pressure. Learned this the hard way. Had to fix my mistakes and it sucked.

    • Ashley Frasca
Ashley Frasca 5 ай бұрын +4

I used this a year ago to do a tile backsplash in my kitchen and the tiles haven't moved at all! I can see how Mia would think the weight of the tile would pull when done on a wall but it definitely doesn't. It's fantastic!

    • CreoleFaerie
      CreoleFaerie 5 ай бұрын +4

I was screaming Nooo when I watched her. Floor tiling isn't the same as wall tiling. Because of the weight pressure on it. The grout is likely going to crack sooner than it should.

@Lysol MyFace it deppends on the kind of glue used. If it is oil based, for example, the moisture will do nothing to it. On the other hand if it is soliable in water it won't last long at all

As someone who has glitter-painted many a wall (don’t ask), a tip I have is to brush your [clean] hand or a rag over the wall after the paint has cured, which helps some of the glitter to poke through and shine more.
