I loved season 7. Yea it's rushed and the dialogue isnt as strong as the previous seasons. But it was exciting to seeing all reunions and first time encounters. It had some great battle scenes, and seeing the alliances formed was intriguing.

Same, I like how game of thrones first started out with multiple character arcs but after many season was when everything gets woven together.

When Davos says “he’s king in the north.” I love when Tyrion gives a slight smirk. I’d like to think that he’s proud of Jon for coming all that way.

I’m surprised there are so many interpretations of Tyrion’s smirk. I thought it was pretty obvious, considering the timing, that he was smiling for exactly the same reason the viewers were probably smiling-because it was funny. After Dany’s excessively long list of titles, Davos gave Rob one as an afterthought. Tyrion smiled because he found the clash of priorities between the south and north amusing.

It also illustrates a core character difference between Jon and Danaerys. Jon didn't want power or to rule, and his intro reflects that. Dany's entire identity is wanting to get power and to rule (even though technically she was not the rightful heir) and her litany of titles reflects a bit of her ego and lack of humility. I think Tyrion's smirk is a subtle acknowledgement of this. It's as if he is going "wow Jon hasn't changed despite gaining power".

@Caleidoz Kopie He didn't break any vows in the Nights Watch. They vow against seeking glory. They vow against holding lands and titles. They vow against taking wives and fathering children. There is no vow against banging a redhead in an ice cave. Or falling in love. More importantly, he sacrificed that love to save The Night's Watch.

@jarret45 They also pretty much cut Howland Reed, and later on his children out of the story. You only see Howland in the tower of joy flashback in the show, but they rarely ever mention him at all. He's supposed to be Ned's most loyal friend and bannerman, and his name comes up a lot in the books. I think he's one of a few people that know Robb made Jon the heir of Winterfell.
There's a lot of correspondence with Reed and the Starks that got cut, and they almost never mention Reed's men ganking Greyjoy's & Bolton soldiers. Then they pretty much killed off Jojen, and just sent Mera off for no reason in the show.

People can slam Barristan Selmy all they want for serving Daenerys, but lets admit, he's the reason Daenerys accepted Jon as a guest and later an ally, because he told her about the crimes her father committed, particularly towards Jon's family. His being honest and truthful to Daenerys led her to try and repent for it by allying with Jon.

@Gav48 Daenerys journey was coming of age to a Targaryen tyrant. Her vision leading to Jon stabbing her was dominating the World and bending the World to her sole will, if Jon would squash individual freedoms with her. Her solders followed her blindly as was evident to Jon during the violent sacking of civilians and surrendered soldiers of Kings Landing. So instead of instigating another war of Jon's supporters vs Deanerys, Drogon and her army, potentially decimating the North, he killed the "head of the dragon". Cersei said it best: "Game of Thrones, you win or you die." Point to remember, Jon is Aegon, The Prince That Is Promised. He's not dead. Daenerys was the Pretender.

@Premium Headpats This is based on medieval history where blood/name is everything. Almost every major character in game of thrones has a relation to a powerful house. There are plenty of characters that had powerful names that did not succeed in garnering power/support. Viserys her brother, is a perfect example. Her bloodline and name are the main reason she even fights to conquer the iron throne in the first place. Yes, she was helped by many because of her name, but so are many other characters too. Her success was a combination of her name and her ambition.

@Sari Manne I took both Yara and Olenna a lot more seriously and they didn't do any peacocking. They didn't need an overblown list of titles and accolades to let people know they were bada**es. Especially Olenna. Tywin Lannister took her seriously. He knew she was not a woman to be trifled with. Because he knew how intelligent and conniving she was. Not because she was constantly announcing how great she was.

@Sari Manne She literally wouldn't have anything if her last name wasn't Targaryen. She would never have become a Khaleesi. She would never have gotten the dragon eggs. She would never have gotten the support of Jorah, Barristan, Varys, Ellaria, Yara, or Olenna. The vast majority of the support she gained, she got because she was born Targaryen.
Ffs, her entire claim to supposedly being the rightful queen hinges on the fact that her last name is Targaryen!

@Jen what on earth are you talking about? the throne was hers by birthright, just because her family was exiled (because of one assholish father) does not mean that the throne no longer belongs to them. the iron throne and the red keep were all created by the targaryens. It was theirs to rule from the beginning. A rebellion does not change or cancel that legacy. Her family was not kicked out by the will of the people, it was kicked out by those who were un-loyal and power hungry. She had every right to take the red keep and the throne because she Is a Targaryen. Robert was a usurper not a true king.

    • Jen
      Jen 2 ай бұрын +3

@Leyla Rustamova that is exactly how it works. Her family wasn't in exile for no reason, a tyrant was overthrown, the people spoke. Her family broke trust with their people and lost their right to rule. Who is she to say their choice doesn't matter. She is not the rightful heir, her family was kicked out by the will of the people. What she is doing now is taking by force something that does not belong to her. The only reason she had the North behind her was because they were at war with Cersi. If Robert was still alive they would have been at war with her.

"Centuries of peace and prosperity"? Did Daenerys ever read any history books? Blackfyre Rebellions, Maegor's war on the faith and The Dance of the Dragons would very much beg to differ. The longest period of peace House Targaryen ever managed to maintain was for 80 years at most.

@theamazingmann STOP misinterpreting GRRMS statements. He multiple times stated that this is a show canon and he will have his own canon in the books.
DD just abused this GOT concept that “ohhh random shocking deaths and plot twists, no main character blah blah” but y’all on par with DD forget that in the beginning all those moments had a logic and a proper build up. S8 is just for the sake of a shock value, nothing more.
there’s a theory from the books that Jon and Dany will restore the House of Targaryen. They have parallels with Daemon/Rhaenyra. Daemon is Rhaenyra’s sword guardian. Jon is more into combat than politics. So, there a chance that Targaryens will be reborn again and more dragons will appear (bc there’s also a theory that there are still eggs located in the North and somewhere else). You see how exciting GRRM’s writing is. Theory on theory.
Y’all can eat crumbs that starting from S5 (after they threw away Dorne’s arc from the books where Ellaria accepted Oberin’s death and never thought of revenge and Oberin’s elder brother’s genius plan against Lannisters) D&D threw at y’all’s faces.

And that is why I do not pay attention to much of the criticism towards season 8... Lol what a fairytale ending that to for a character like dany who's been unraveling for years. She's literally a power hungry autocrat who couldn't let ANYONE come between her and iron throne or empire. She outright denied Northern independence, despite everything sansa was okay with jon in charge. Jon was okay with sansa Or dany incharge, but dany, nope. And that's why she's not suitable. She couldn't share power.

Still the BEST show minus season 8. For a long time, I haven't been able to rewatch this whole series because how unjustly season 8 and the ending was handled. To this day, it still leaves me troubled but I've learned to compartmentalize and almost completely block season 8. I just imagine my own ending after reaching Season 7. I know this is wishful thinking at this point in time but I hope you guys some day remake season 8 with most, if not all the casts. It's never been done before but then again, GoT has never been done before until it was. I don't think there has ever been a show or film that unequivocally deserves a remake than the ending of Game of Thrones.

Something I never put together until recently is that this is the first time Tyrion and Davos meet face to face after the Battle of Blackwater Bay where Davos' son Mathos was killed by Tyrion's wildfire. What I like most about Davos is that he's a sensible and reasonable man. He doesn't blame Tyrion for Mathos' death. He doesn't seek revenge or harbor any ill will towards Tyrion. He understands it wasn't personal and that it was "just business".

@Ian Vera I don't think the proper ending for a series like GOT was a "happy ending" or a "mainstream ending". This series was characterized by misfortune, injustice, brutality, betrayal, setbacks, mistakes, harsh reality. If it had ended with a happy ending, it would not have been consistent, I think.
I just think that the ending that was given was excessively tragic and also has many inconsistencies with the lines of development of the events and characters. There are characters that had an evolution or development that seems unnatural, non-coherent, a crazy jump. That's what I think objectively.
Personally, I expected tragedy, to have a bitter taste in my mouth, I didn't expect it to be totally tragic and unfair.
But I agree with the point of GRRM's extreme lateness.

@SuspectedCrab The fact you actually think GRRM will give us his final book, let alone TWOW, shows me how big your IQ really is. But if you wanna defend an author who is clearly stalling for soon to be 12 years to write his second to last book, then I guess its your right as well. I give credit where its due, and D&D gave us an ending on time which is something GRRM should learn from. GOT remains the best fantasy tv show for a reason. Period.

@Ian Vera I don't think rushed, silly writing would please anyone with at least an average IQ. The fact that there are actors on the show who weren't pleased either is pretty telling. It's really depressing when you think about how Daenerys could've actually been a very well written villain, if D&D didn't keep insisting or stuck with how much her character is trying to be more heroic for 7 and a half season and then abandon that arc for the last few episodes left.
She easily could've been Game of Thrones' Walter White or Darth Vader!

I never understood why Daenerys was the “rightful heir”. I mean, if you want to just invade the place and take over the throne that’s fine, but the throne was conquered, wasn’t it? Robert won and took the throne, and his children then became the heirs. What “right” does Daenerys have over the throne?

@Axel Johnson I don’t get what’s so hard to understand about this. It doesn’t matter what the crown thinks in the eyes of rebels, they view Joffrey illegitimate just as he does with them. They don’t need the approval of a house they no longer consider themselves vassals of. The only approval they need is from their vassals and populace. Only way your point would make sense is in terms of their claim to the iron throne, sure that’s false until they actually win it. However, rightfully ruling over their region independently until the crown attempts to do something about it is valid. They are kings until they are brought to their knees and forced to swear fealty to the crown, it’s simple as that.

    • Axel Johnson
Axel Johnson 4 ай бұрын +2

@oKxy Yes it does matter. Ever since Aegon's Conquest there have been NO Kings in Westeros except for the one sitting on the Iron Throne, usually a Targaryen (until Robert's Rebellion at least). Renly was never a King, Balon was never a King, Stannis was never a King. They were all considered LORDS of their respective regions but those regions are not independent from the Crown. All 7 Kingdoms are bound to the Iron Throne and all the Lords ruling those Kingdoms are vassals to whoever is sitting on the Iron Throne at the time. Since Robb was in open rebellion against the Crown AND lost the war against them it makes no sense to call him King in the North. The North did not suddenly reclaim their independence.

    • Axel Johnson
Axel Johnson 4 ай бұрын +2

@Post Punk 69 Robb was never crowned, he was NAMED King in the North by the North but his claim was never supported by anyone except the people of the North. It's like Cersei saying she was Queen of the Seven Kingdoms in Season 8 even though no one recognized her as such except the people of King's Landing. Robb was Prince in the North at best.

@Rex Splode Btw a lot of people loved Season 8. If you watch reactions to season 8 on KZclip you'll see 95% of reactors enjoyed it. There's a vocal majority on the internet that might not like the overall pacing or how some storylines turned out, but in terms of overarching themes and subversion season 8 is exactly what you'd expect from George RR Martin, though obviously more developped as we are talking about different mediums, tv shows are not a replacement for books and never will be, they are adaptations.

      @Red 2 I don't think he would make a great ruler.
You cannot be so meek and easy to manipulate to be a great ruler.
How he allowed Tyrion to manipulate him into killing Dany was beyond pathetic to me.
Also, Dany's descent into madness is partly his fault.
There is a moment where all Dany wanted, and needed, was his love. She had lost two of her dragons for him, she had lost her best friend, and the North had betrayed her despite her sacrificing everything for them.
And all she wanted was for Jon to love her, give himself to her, and herself to him, and Jon couldn't give her that.
Imagine going through all that and then having the person you love and trust the most reject you.
That was the finally straw that made her descend into madness.

The Iron Throne was the true source of evil. All fighting over it, killing for it, just to have power then do nothing with it. The person who truly wants to rule the best, do the best, for all need never to sit on it. Drogon melting the throne of evil was symbolic. He lost his mother, and his 2 brothers because of it.

House Stark never broke faith with House Targaryen. That oath was sworn by Torrhen Stark on the condition that no Targaryen would ever harm a northman, an oath that was broken by the Mad King when he murdered Rickard and Brandon Stark.
Let me note that the only reason the Starks bent the knee at all is because the Targaryens had dragons, the one thing that the North's natural defences could not protect against. They could have rebelled and declared independence the moment the last dragons died but they didn't, because to do that would make them oathbreakers and they would never do that. Had Aerys not burned Lord Rickard alive and made his heir Brandon strangle himself to death the Starks would have remained loyal vassals of House Targaryen.

This is the moment that made that for me started to hint that Dany was losing her sanity. I had been worried about her obsession with the Iron Throne since season 1, it had always been there, but I, like everyone else in the audience, was willing to ignore it - I think people who hate season 8's ending missed out on stuff like this just like Tyrion, seeing the signs but thinking it would be okay, that she wouldn't go berserk. I liked the last season, and I'm alright with admitting that.
