This is true dedication. To think Jay went ahead and found a woman, made her fall in love with him, move in, made a baby , waited 9 months to be born. All of this for a Surfshark VPN ad-read.

Harry Beck's initial map design was huge. My grandmother (his niece) remembered seeing him climbing all over the dining table in his parent's house in Highgate making alterations and corrections.
She was very proud of her uncle's achievement and we have had copies of the originals hung up in our houses ever since.
Even now, my children are aware of Harry Beck's map.
To me, my Great Grand-Uncle's design is one of the most beautiful pieces of technical drawing ever, bordering on art.

@CCABP it's not that he's famous, it's that his design is one of the most recognised and game-changing maps in the world. Every other metro based their design off this one. The Kardashians are famous, this man is intelligent and did at least one extremely useful thing.

@CCABP I feel immensely proud. Most of the time it's not something that anyone is overfully fussed about. But then you get moments like when my Design teacher at school told me that he wrote his dissertation about Uncle Harry.

Advertisers should let KZcliprs have more freedom on how they present the company, and more people would watch the ad. Better than the 100th "I downloaded App X today and use it every day, it's so amazing!"

I am a train driver and yes, Jay is correct - you don't need to know the twists of the track at all. Our 'maps' of the railway, called S&I diagrams, represent everything in either straight lines or draws junctions in perfect geometry e.g. 45 degree angles then continuing as more straight lines.

    • AudieHolland
      AudieHolland 6 күн бұрын

@hedgehog3180 Whoever claimed that a train could stop in time not to run over an obstacle or person determined to be in their way (or tied to the tracks by some movie villain)?
All the same you agree a train must stop even if it is too late.
Even if there is no damage or danger to the train.
Or are trains and train drivers above the law that they can just hit anyone and keep running?

    • hedgehog3180
      hedgehog3180 6 күн бұрын

@AudieHolland Well it's still the case that a train simply can't stop in time to react to a sudden obstacle unless it's going very slow. The train will still have to stop because it won't be safe to continue as the engine itself might have been damaged but it just can't stop in time for any sudden obstacle. That's why train lines generally have fences around them and level crossings are slowly being removed on most networks. Unless you're on a really long straight section, like 500 meters, the driver won't have time to notice, react and stop the train in time.

@AudieHolland The signal thing isnt actually true, at least not in the UK. In most circumstances drivers must learn the route they drive off by heart, there is no on board interface telling them what aspect the next signal is displaying.

Apart from the video being a thing of absolute genius and creativity and therefore pure joy to watch, I need to point out that not only Geoff has his hilarious appearances in it, but his mum got in there as well (0:17)!😂😂 Huge respect to you, Jay, for yet another masterpiece (talking 'bout the video, not the kid...but surely, that's one too😂). Never disappoints.

Jay, I found your videos back in 2019 when I did a solo trip to London and have been binge watching ever since. Your videos offer great detailed information that is well put together, delivered in a comedic fashion that help keep it from being just another boring informational video you could find at a museum. You have a real talent and I want to say thanks to you (and your crew who help) for making these videos. Keep up the amazing work!

Haha, chuffing brilliant! 😅 Another splendidly told tale complete with fantastic genius level stupidity, exactly what I needed whilst dealing with a long break on a long shift! It was worth it just to see Geoff dressed up as Frank Pick. This did make me cackle out loud like a stupid child, which is something only a few clever swines manage (Messers Hazard and Marshall being among them) and it is always most welcome 👍
I do feel a bit for Stingemore as his map wasn’t at all bad, whereas Beck takes all the credit and kudos these days. Then again he has been dead even longer than Beck so probably has other things on his mind 🤷🏻‍♂️
Looking forward to the second instalment with a reasonable degree of eagerness 👍🍀🍻

Maps like this are great for people who know the city well, when I was a visitor in London, it was often impossible for me to make sensible decision about places to visit from a specific underground stop. NYC has a similar map design for its subway system and since I know NYC well, I don't have the same kinds of problems.

okay what’s CRAZY about this is that I swear maybe one or two days before this was posted I was going through my subscriptions and found this channel and went “oh wait how did I miss these videos I haven’t seen one in months?” And then realized I actually was up to date and just went “oh hm I wonder when he’ll post again.” AND THEN HE DID LITERALLY THE NEXT DAY. this isn’t actually crazy lol it’s just like the fourth random and serendipitous thing to happen like that this week so it feels extra wild.

This is great, but I feel like this could have very easily been an episode of Map Men, all you needed was a slightly different intro and to get Mark to agree to show. The two of you go together in a comedy video like a cup of tea and a packet of milk arrowroot biscuits.
