If anyone’s wondering, Ceres has been reclassified as minor/dwarf planet, and Ceres even has some tectonic activity. Planets, dwarf planets and moons are round because at a certain point their mass is great enough to gain noticeable gravity. Their gravitational field acts as though it originates from the center of the body and pulls everything toward it. With its large body and internal heating from radioactive elements, a planet behaves like a fluid, and over long periods of time succumbs to the gravitational pull from its center of gravity. The only way to get all the mass as close to planet's center of gravity as possible is to form a sphere. The technical name for this process is "isostatic adjustment."
With much smaller bodies, such as the 20-kilometer asteroids we have seen in recent spacecraft images, the gravitational pull is too weak to overcome the asteroid's mechanical strength. As a result, these bodies do not form spheres. Rather they maintain irregular, fragmentary shapes.

10,000 years isn’t “soon”. That’s a long way away, and we’d see it’s approach long, long before it reaches us; assuming we’re still around 10,000 years from now. We’re already testing ways to change the path of such objects, so if we’re still around, it’s more than likely we’ll be able to successfully avoid a collision.

Thankfully it _didn’t_ deviate from its orbit. That’s my point. Being Vietnamese has nothing to do with it. Heck, there wasn’t even life on earth yet when Ceres established the orbit it still has today. 😂
Yes, it would be a concern for humans _if_ it lost enough of its orbit to actually travel out of the asteroid belt, somehow didn’t get sucked up by Jupiter, got past mars, and headed towards a very specific point of Earth’s orbit at exactly the right time. But Ceres _hasn’t deviated._ That’s very easy to understand, no matter where you’re from.

Crazy to think that an asteroid around 10km would be enough to decimate all life on the earth. Anything over that like some of these asteroids would be overkill--would probably rip a piece of the planet off and turn it back into a volcanic wasteland.

That is what hit what was orbiting our solar system now the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars, I'm pretty sure it was a habitual planet, it's in the zone, kind of but maybe on the edge. Who knows Mars could have been habitual, and the shock wave made Mars what it is now. I always wanted to be an astronomer, but the math would kill my brain.

For anyone who Dosent know, a "planet killer" is generally considered anything over 5km in diameter. The Asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was a bit smaller then Eros, as someone also already stated below.
It is strange and terrifying to thing that something in the grand scheme of things can be so small, and could wipe out all life on earth.

@A Plant Hello, I'm definitely no expert at all. However from what I've looked into and read on the subject, yes it would have a significant impact on life on Earth. Apophis isn't large enough to cause an extinction event however it would cause a major loss of life and would be a major disruption for life on earth if it were to impact with our planet.
However impact on either the 2029 fly by or the 2036 loop back past has been pretty much ruled out completely by the scientific community. So we should not have to deal with those consequences :)

The last four are no longer considered asteroids. They are now classified as minor planets. Ceres even has tectonic and volcanic activity, as the recent probe has revealed. It is known that one or more of the other minor planets in the asteroid belt also display tectonic and volcanic activity.

@Lexi xXx Before they changed the classification of celestial objects, Ceres and three others now also classified as Dwarf Planets were considered Asteroids. As all 4 are in the asteroid belt, their classification was due to where they are located, but now it is due to their sizes and shape. "Dwarf Planet" is a classification that includes object that are large enough for their gravity to shape them into rough spheres, but do not clear their own orbital paths of smaller objects. That's not to say they don't get impacted with the smaller objects, because they do; but their gravity does not significantly change the paths of lesser sized objects that get relatively close to them. The tiny objects will of coarse be more affected, but must get really close to be affected.

*Incoming asteroids, meteors (NEOs) in October and beyond...*
*God the Father on LGBTQ, plagues and why fire from sky and how to get protected from it.*
*Tuesday, October 30, 2018 (Fr. Michel Rodrigue message)*
      From the Eternal Father
      My son,
      Listen and write
I demand that this message be communicated to everyone and everywhere that you have preached in United States and in Canada.
Remember the night when Padre Pio brought you into Heaven to see the Holy Family. It was a teaching for you and for the people who have heard you. It was also a sign to recall the night when my Beloved Son Jesus was born into the world.
Remember how my Evangelist Matthew wrote by the divine inspiration of the Holy Spirit how the star stopped over the place where My Baby Son Jesus was born. It was a sign for the Wise men. Today, it is a sign for you and for all Christians and for all the nations.
The Holy Family is a sign for every family, and we should model ourselves after them. I demand that every family, who receives this message, should have a representation of the Holy Family in their home. It can be an Icon or a statue of the Holy Family, or a permanent Manger in a center place in the home. The representation must be blessed and consecrated by a priest.
As the star, followed by the Wise men, stopped over the Manger, the chastisement from the sky will not hit the Christians families devoted and protected by the Holy Family. The fire from the sky is a chastisement for the horrible crime of abortion and the culture of death, the sexual perversion, and the cupidity (lust) regarding the identity of man and woman. My children seek their perverted sins more than Eternal life. The increasing blasphemies and persecution of my just people offend Me. The Arm of my Justice will come now. They do not hear my Divine Mercy. I must now let many plagues happen in order to save the most people that I can from the slavery of Satan.
Send this message to everyone. I have given Saint Joseph, My representative on earth, as a protector of the Holy Family, the authority to protect the Church which is the body of Christ. He will be the protector during the trials of this time. The Immaculate Heart of My daughter Mary and the Sacred Heart of my Beloved Son Jesus, with the Chaste and Pure Heart of Saint Joseph, will be the shield of your home, your family, and your Refuge during the events to come.

      ASTEROIDS SOON TO HIT EARTH!☄️
Please get right with God NOW.
I saw Jesus standing in my house, with two angels by His side.
I came to Him and said, “Lord, I’m not worthy, but You are worthy.”
He said, “Are you ready to go?”
      “Yes, Lord, I’m ready!”
      He said, “Prepare for liftoff.”
      “Today Lord?”
“Said I not to make haste to prepare for My Arrival?”
“Lord, I’m not concerned for myself. I’m just concerned for all the souls who aren’t ready to meet You. What about them?”
“Just as I said to you, Beloved, he that is righteous, let him be righteous, and he that is holy, let him be holy. But the unbelievers and the profane shall have their portion in the Lake of Fire, which is the second death.”
“Lord, what can I do? Please use me.”
“Prepare for liftoff, Beloved. Dost thou have last words for thy unsaved family members?”
“Yes, Lord. I pray for them, that after we are lifted off they may remain faithful until death, and will not receive the mark of the Beast, which is the ID chip/ tattoo, or vaccine tied to the coronovirus.”
“I have heard thy prayer and have seen thy tears, My daughter. They that are with Me are called and chosen and faithful. Let him who hath ears to hear, hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”

And then people wonder how an asteroid can cause so much damage to the Earth. If a hail the size of a baseball is capable of piercing the roof of a house or a car window from such a height at a significantly lower flight speed, then an asteroid flying into the planet's atmosphere at a speed of at least 20 km/s is capable of destroying much, if not everything.

Right? Asteroids in our solar system also move insanely slow. The supermassive black hole in the center of our galaxy can slingshot objects at 25% the speed of light. A 1km asteroid traveling at 25% the speed of light, has enough energy to vaporize the entirety of Earth.

@Mox Cockroaches would probably survive and some other insects. Plants i'm not so sure. Apophis impact would raise so much dust in the atmosphere that it would block sun and cause nuclear winter. After the dust settles and thawing begins, moss would come back. Also plants from seeds in the ground, but bees would be gone so polination would be an issue. Most sea flora and fauna would also be gone from acidification of the sea. Earth and life on earth in some form or other would still be there.
