Who else thinks all the self depreciating jokes are actually a cover up for the fact that the "narrator" is actually really good looking?? 😁😉
Love the videos, as I'm usually painting.... Yaaa, I sat alone at lunch too, lol! 😉.....when I watch and miss some things. I always come here and find what I might have missed explained perfectly well and then the whole episode is clear. I just wish I could get into the books 😏

Actually, Rhaenyras point in the argument regarding the step stones was that the cost to defend the region would pale in comparison to the cost of the war that would come as a result of leaving it undefended. She is trying to say that her idea in the long run is more financially stable, and it shows that she is thinking logically about the situation and being realistic, whereas Alicent is just playing the antagonist and truly has no idea what she's talking about.

I wish we were given more scenes of Harwin Strong and Laena Valeryon before they died because although their deaths are impactful to the story, I feel like I would be more attached to the characters if they were given more screen time, further making their deaths have more of an impact on me and/or the audience

Tbh, I felt like they made Laenas death rather emotional. Not because of her alone but because of the bond she had with Vhagar.
I recall them saying that once a dragon bonds they’re bonded for life and will only do what’s told to them by their rider. We see that when she approaches Vhagar she gives the command Dracyarus (I think it’s spelled) and the dragon imo, was confused by who she was telling it to burn.
When it briefly looked around it realized she meant to burn her, the rider. The dragon then lets out a cry, realizing she has to do what’s commanded of her.
That’s heartbreaking in itself. I’m sure if you’ve ever had to pull the plug on someone you loved or witnessed it this might’ve choked you.

You're not supposed to be attached to them, you're supposed to realize that they were the love interests for the characters that were supposed to be attached to for 10 years and feel bad for them for suffering another tragic loss. If they fleshed out the relationships more audiences might find themselves wishing the targaryians remained with their original "loves" but killing them without fleshing them out allows the audience to focus on daemon and rhaenaras love story.

@Dana Glabeman If I recall, Harwin dies in a fire along with his father in the book. Some said the fire was an accident and blamed on the curse of Harrenhal. While others threw out an extensive list of all who could have possibly done it and their why’s. Of course Daemon was on that list. But if he did kill Harwin…it was by fire and not at a tourney.

I love how Criston Cole is behaving like the usual rejected guy 😂 Seriously tho, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and say that the pain of losing his honor, which was all he had, really did affect him tremendously. After all he admitted to his "sin" readily knowing he'd be executed. But seriously how naive is he? He calls her a spoiled cnt like he didn't enjoy banging her too. It's his own goddamn fault for expecting the heir to the throne to abandon everything for a guy. He should've settled for Harwin's role.

In my opinion, Cole's demand to elope with Raenyra is ridiculous and doesn't fit his character at all. If the producers wanted us to believe he's that needy and weak they shouldn't have made him a tourney champion and a brave knight.

@Rohit Kumar Yes, at least one, maybe 2 episodes. I don't feel the one scene between Rhaenyra and Daemon was enough to establish their lifelong bond: they could have extended the time 1 episode and established both the weird 3-way Laena/Daemon/Rhaenyra relationship and kept Harwin around a while longer. It's not clear in book if Daemon killed Harwin because he thought a newly freed Rhaenyra would marry her lover, or because he wouldn't tolerate any sort of lover once he married her, but one more episode exploring that relationship would have been great character development for everybody, not to mention the way they did it drastically underused a very good Ryan Corr.

@Mechanical David The thing is, Cole is not Involuntarily Celibate. It is Voluntary. Rhaenyra wanted him to be what Harwin Strong became. Her marriage with Laenor was only political and she wanted Cole to be her real relationship. But that guilt that he felt over sacrificing his honor and soiling the White cloak as well as sleeping with the princess without being married to her was driving him crazy and almost to the point of suicide. The way that he views the world is WAY to traditional for him to be content in an open marriage type of situation with Rhaenyra. Criston Cole could have easily had Rhaenyra if he just wanted her but she wasn't able to give herself in a manner that would ease his concious and assuage his guilt.

@meikoblock In the book Vhagar wasn't lost or MIA, she just didn't live in the dragon pit since she was too big. Laena claimed her right after that marriage negotiations, at 12. Dragons SEEM to respond to children: very few claim their first dragon after adolescence, and those that do have a MUCH harder time. If the show goes on for several seasons, you'll see what usually happens when you try to claim your first dragon as an adult. It's not pretty.

I can't believe they didn't give us anything for Laena and Rhaenyra being good friends. My friends who haven't read the book do not care about any of these deaths and it makes me so sad the show won't spend any time on character development.

    • Inzanti
      Inzanti 2 ай бұрын

@kelvin bailey Yeah, I've read the book. Wasn't my favorite but I thought it had potential. We know a lot about what happens during the Dance but these other story threads are so sparse and I was hoping they would expand. I truly wouldn't have complained if we got even one more episode of Harwin and Laena. Oh well, I'll be back if they do Aegon's conquest 😅

    • kelvin bailey
      kelvin bailey 2 ай бұрын

@Inzanti they're getting through this part of the story quickly because a lot of the major players of the actual story they want to tell are the children of alicent and rhaenara and even daemon. Bit hard to fill in the gaps when it's litteraly decades between the questions around succession after aemmas and her son's death and rhaenara becoming the heir and alicent becoming queen consort. We got the major events that impacted the main players and why they have the motives they have and now with the next time jump we'll see the children are grown and further division within the kingdom will occur. They can flesh it out as much as they want and fill in gaps when all the characters are on the board at the same time and the real story begins.

    • kelvin bailey
      kelvin bailey 2 ай бұрын

You don't need to fully devolp characters with such a small role whose deaths is what's impactful on the main players of the story. Had they fleshed them out for an episode or two and then killed them off you'd all be complaining that they wasted time on characters that didn't do anything just to kill them or still complain that there wasn't enough of them. They gave harwin and laena more than enough time for audiences to know what they meant to daemon and rhaenara without it taking away from their future romantic relationship.

    • Dana Glabeman
Dana Glabeman 2 ай бұрын +1

Yeah, the vibe I got from the book of the three of them always being together is that Laena somehow senses Daemon and Rhaenyra are soul mates and she's somehow ok with this, and that the Laena and Rhaenyra dynamic is almost like sister wives, like they're close because one has Daemon physically and one has him emotionally.

    • Push Ista
Push Ista 2 ай бұрын +3

I know! And it's not just the lack of scenes, it's the lack of meaningful exchanges! The dialogue in the first seasons of GoT was packed with meaning. Every time people talked their conversation would sparkle with underlying power dynamic and make us feel for the characters. I was disappointed to see it's not there in the House of Dragons. I mean GRRM could have worked on the dialogue for the show even though it wasn't originally in Fire and blood books

@Fotomaton Yeah the Ser Criston thing kind of didn't make sense. How much older was he for him to not have been replaced by another actor? I do like keeping the actors the same per season like they do on The Crown. It allows for them to work, get some recognition, and leave a mark. However, I do not think this is supposed to move or feel familiar at all. In fact, I believe the series is meant to be short lived due to all of the spin offs they want to create. The budget to be making 3 Game of Throne series is substantial. I do not keep up with what goes on outside the show, so maybe they already mapped out the plan but if not, I do not see this being more than 3-4 seasons.

Criston Cole is one of seven Kingsguard. They are literally the most elite and privileged force in the realm. They protect the King and answer to him directly. The only ones who could possibly arrest a Kingsguard are the other Kingsguard, and they would only do so at the command of the King. Additionally, it’s implied Alicent, the Queen, had a role in pardoning Criston Cole, so the only possible authority that could get him in trouble - the King - was most likely dissuaded by Alicent.
On the other hand, Harwin Strong is a captain or commander of the City Watch, nowhere near the level of privilege and impunity of the Kingsguard. Him attacking a Kingsguard is absolutely going too far for his rank, and is technically endangering the King himself by hampering one of his personal guard’s ability to protect him. It’s a clear offense and an overstepping of boundaries, which is expected to be punished. And even then the punishment wasn’t that bad, since Harwin Strong’s main title is that of heir of Harrenhal, not whatever position he held in the City Watch. He kept the former, lost the later, which is a fairly lenient punishment for his transgression.

One major question i cannot get past is how do Viserys' and Alicent's children have silver hair whereas Rhaenyra and Harwin's don't. It's just weird because Viserys (silver hair) + Alicent (brunette hair) = Aegon 2 and Aemond (silver hair)
And Rhaenyra (silver hair) + Harwin (brunette hair) = Jacaerys, Lucerys and the new baby boy (brunette hair)? Like why? It doesn't make any sense. Does the hair colour only depend on the father?

The shows (both GOT & HOTD) have been very inconsistent about this, despite it being the whole point of season 1 in GOT, ie the Baratheon kids. But apparently, in real world, when babies are born, they tend to look more like their fathers so as to avoid any drama.

A lot of comments about the spectacular acting in this episode. Every single one of these actors deserves so much. They have been able to pull in an audience to want more even if their screen time was for a few mins. Another example was how Aemma Targaryen pulled the screen a part from the other side. I never thought she was going to die because her stance was so powerful, I thought her character is going to make it far; she was going to be an important character

I liked the inference that Haelena is a Seer, muttering "he'll have to close 1 eye" after Alicent tells Aemond "You'll have a dragon one day, I promise"; alluding to Aemond becoming Aemond One-eye the day he claims Vagar. It would make sense if she was a Seer, she does end up going crazy later on like many of her ancestors did and kin will. Usually driven mad by visions but tragedy would do it too I imagine.

@TheTimeIsNow that's not an excuse to openly talk about the book on a non-spoiler video. Can you imagine walking into a theater to see a movie and the poster next to the door just tells you what is going to happen in the sequel and then at the bottom says "the book this movie was based on has been out 4 years by now, geez, read the book already, who in the world watches movies without reading the book first? Oh wait, a lot of people? Well who cares, you looked at this poster, it's your fault and you deserve all the spoilers you get little non-book-reading-baby".

I am so disappointed in the speed and the loss they doing to this story. There is so much they have skipped over. To have the money they have there could of been much more. So much in the book happened between each birth both to Alicent and Rhaenyra . And Daemons and his wife and Rhaenyra and her husband had bonded such a relationship almost the 4. Season 8 of GOTs was such a disappointment but in all reality HOTD is not much better. I am so disappointed. Thank goodness you give great break downs to give some excitement to this season. We lived their lives with them and couldn’t wait for next episode. At the end of the season that’s all everyone talked about til the next season came. In between seasons it stayed all over internet especially on you tube I am out and about, work, everywhere and House of the Dragon isn’t talked about. Mainly all I hear is did you see episode, and oh I like the dragons. Then nothing. I still watch GOTs every other week and drive my family crazy. For those who love House of the Dragon that’s wonderful, for me and I know of a lot like me, we like it but we don’t love it. It just don’t have the quality, excitement, adventure, and the cliff hanging as GOTs.

I'm renaming the Greens to the Bitters.
Ser Cole has no one but himself to blame for "sinning". He didn't have to sleep with Rheanyra, they even showed how he weighed that decision with that long pause before he put his cloak down in episode 4. If he wasn't ready to be her boy toy, why did he agree so easily? Why did he even think that she would discard her duty for him? He's known her for how many years, he knows how important it is for her to become Queen. Dude assumed things and then got butthurt when his expectations weren't met and let his emotions dictate his actions...even ten years later when he goads Harwin Strong. He's probably jealous too because Rheanyra hasn't discarded Harwin Strong, even after 10 years (I think Harwin and Rhaenyra loved each other just from the way they looked at each other during their brief moments together).
Alicent is also bitter over the fact that while she has to serve the old and decaying King, Rhaenyra gets to do whatever she wants with handsome young knights. I'd have no problem with this jealousy except she masks her hatred for Rhaenyra as being honourable and just and pretends that she isn't going to benefit from it. Not to mention the way she acts so catty at every opportunity.
Larys also probably bitter/resentful at his brother and even father because he has a clubfoot and I can do a whole psychoanalysis on how that most likely gave him an inferior complex because his father and brother are everything a Strong should be and he isn't. Add on top of that he is a second son and that makes a perfect recipe for the betrayal. Larys was dealt the same hand as Tyrion and yet he did not love his brother as much as Tyrion loved his. Sad, considering how it all ends for House Strong

I was really starting to enjoy the show over eps 4 and 5, and while I still found this episode watchable, the massive changes: actors, new characters, and especially changes in already established character's personalities made this a bit of a struggle.
Obviously so much has happened in the ten years omitted, that we've missed out on seeing character development - which is imperitive in any good story IMO. It's the difference between 'show me don't tell me.'
The character I found most perplexing was Criston Cole. His development just isn't believable. He went from this honourable, duty-bound paragon of virtue to a foul-mouthed, bullying psycho - and yes I know he's bitter because he was rejected but come on. There was no hint of a propensity for grudge-holding prior to him sexing it up with Rhaenyra. His character now doesn't ring true.
And then Harwin is such an important part of the plot but he's in the show for five and half minutes. It's all a bit rushy-rushy.
Maybe it's not such a big deal if you've read the books, but if you're only watching the tv show, it's just too jarring. Anyhoo, I'll persist with it and probably become addicted 😂

The change of actors was in my opinion a bad choice. It's underestimating the importance of characters like Rhaenyra who will remind us of Daenarys... If it was a question of a good 20 to 30 years it would be understandable, but this is 10 years. And for me, the change of actor is not justified. I mean, we could have just aged them a bit like we normally do... really I don't get it. What is certain is that the pillar representing a character like Rhaenyra has collapsed and it is no longer the same series...

After giving some thought, I was thinking of a crazy Idea about the symbolism the scenes of the rats represent. I was thinking that they represent exactly what it is, a rat. If you look back at the scene when Pricess Rhaenra escapes to hook up with Daemon, someone snitched on her about it to Otto and created this whole family issue. In this case Otto will represent the rat. We see again the rats in the last episode when Viserys is in his room. In this episode it is probably representing Lars being the one killing his family for his own reasons. I think it is representing the many individuals that are always trying to eat away in some form those who are in power for their own political agenda. We saw it in GOT original series so why not show the same type of people since that has always existed in Kings Landing. NOTE: I am just thinking out loud here guys so please let me know what you think or if you see it in a different way.

I haven't read the book yet, but is Daemon also indifferent to one of his daughters or is this a change made by the showrunners in order to make Daemon less likable to the audience? I thought Daemon was supposed to love and care (only) about his family
I also see that a scene where Daemon comforts his daughters after their mothers death was cut and I wonder if the showrunners want us to root less for him

    • Floristini

      @Regina Phalange
I mean, if anything they’re going the other route - they’re exploring the flaws of stereotypical masculinity, especially in Daemon. He can be a loving father, but still have his own flaws in how he shows that love, and, in this case, this definitely seems like a standard “this child is like me and the other one isn’t”.
As for Laenor, I don’t think they’re doing a bad job with him. It’s a good choice to have him be very apolitical and more battle oriented. He has that very typically perceived manly orientation for war and the thrill of the fight, he just happens to also be gay. It gives him depth and doesn’t fall in that common “he’s gay and therefore feminine and that’s pretty much all this character is” trap.

    • Regina Phalange
      Regina Phalange 2 ай бұрын

@Floristini I don't say that in the show it's not relevant but that in the book apparently it's not the case and he's a loving father, I also read that Laenor is less caricatural in the book while in this episode he doesn't care about serious matters, I hope the screenwriters won't fall into the mistake of some recent shows confusing feminism with male caricature/bashing

    • Floristini
      Floristini 2 ай бұрын

Daemon is definitely a complicated character. I think he’s a bit like every other parent of multiple children, in that he has at least *some* favoritism towards one. The thing with Daemon is that he can’t really hide it or fake it. One of his daughters managed to hatch a dragon, and will be a dragon rider, like the Valyrians of old that he so idolizes. One of his daughters is a “dragon” like him, while the other... not so much. He clearly has a favorite tied to the motives that were laid out in this episode (i.e him obsessively reading about dragon riders). He’s just a bad parent in that he can’t see his children equally because of his own notions of worth and nobility.

It doesn't make sense for her to have 3 bastard children. I mean she already knew that people were gossiping and doubting the legitimacy of her children but she still went on and gave birth to another bastard child, knowing it only makes her claim to the throne weaker. IDK but all this makes her look stupid. and Leanor betraying his house like that was just off for me he knows he's the heir to driftmark and eventually one of his sons will have to take over and yet he just accepts the 'strong' children as his, meaning he'll just allow children with no blood ties to his to rule his father throne. In episode 5 they both agreed to do their duties I would imagine that making true born heirs would be part of their duties.
Alicent comes off as cruel yes, but I would also not allow my true-born children to kneel to a bastard king in the future. They have Targaryen blood but we know that bastards don't have a claim to the iron throne, If so all bastards made by kings would have a claim.

Ok, upon more investigation. Larys Strongs' use of the Beetle symbol could be because of the symbolism of the Beetle in Nature which is "Almost all beetles can represent strength, transformation, and a renewal of nature. Beetles are some of the smallest creatures on earth, but they are far from the weakest. These small creatures represent and impress with their strength and fortitude" Larys being considered the weaker of the 2 brothers in physicality, shows his strength in his mental cunningness and fortitude in getting what he wants.

    1. Helaena during Alicent and Aemond's conversation: "He'll have to close an eye" referring to Aemond losing an eye but bonding with Vhagar next episode.
    2. Harwin when leaving Rhaenyra and the children: "Next time we meet I'll be a Stranger." Foreshadowing his death as one of the seven deities, death, is named the Stranger.
The showrunners definitely put sentences in each episode that will allude to what will happen next. :)

Does anyone else feel like they are moving uncial unnecessarily fast? It’s like they’re not sure if they’ll be picked up again, but .. we know they’ll have several more seasons to further the plot. Will the plot slow way down at some point soon? We didn’t get nearly enough of Leana or Harwin and they’ll likely kill Leanor in episode 7. Is the whole point of the first season to tell the story of how Rheanyra and Daemon end up together?

Larys should lose one Petyr Baelish out of five for going through the trouble of cutting the tongues of his agents yet given them the same insignia he caries around (btw, it looks like a firefly to me with the gemstone at the bottom of the bug)

Something about this series that stops me from fully getting into it, I am not sure if its the general plot or fits of bad acting each episode. Or it could be actors set as strong warriors when looking at them, they obviously are not. I dunno,

I think Larys telling the queen at the end that he did it on her behalf was his was of deviously threatening her where if she decides to rat him out he would say he was acting for her. He's pulling a lot of strings

Absolutely. He’s giving Alicent what she wants, he’s possibly getting what he wants, he’s furthering his commitment as Alicent’s ally and he’s making sure she can’t get rid of him all at once.

the time jumps are ruining the show,it is being used to justify the speedy feel of the last season of GOT. as well, they didnt have to recast the characters: its hard to become immersed with the character development and story arcs. part of what made GOT so great was the IMMENSE character development. its IMPOSSIBLE to bond with these characters. many are so disjointed with this show, lets be honest: we all want this to be special,to see no faults due to its predecessor.

Is this going to be a one season thing? It seems like it with the changes of the cast. I can't see it going on as long as Game of Thrones like this. Most people don't like change and they will slowly lose their audience if they continue like this.

The show so far is 💥but the ten year jump from 1 episode to the next they should have gave us 3 more episodes before episode 6. I just wish demon and raneara would end up together that would be what a power house couple to crush Alisent and Sir cole(what a B*&%:)he is becoming🤷. I wish the king would pull a king Henry the 8th move and off with her head. She is mad at RANEARA when she was basically sold to the king from her own dad and she was doing it all behind raneara's back so she betrayed and lied from the being not RANEARA. She should be reminded of that rather then look at danerays kids smh... She should be mad that her father put her in that life with the king.they need to make demon & RANEARA rule and to make this show go crazy💥 If the writers are smart they will .but if you watch game of thrones jofrerry tells us how RANEARA dies. So hopefully the writers don't follow the myths and books and choose their own exicting ending unlike game of thrones ending🤢👎.
