The mom telling the son as to why he's so different from when he was a kid, and the son only saying "sorry" feels so relatable. It's those times where it's hard to explain because you know they'd overreact if you tell more.

@Bad Man Slaughter everyone is just learning, I don't know your situation but all I can say is, if you can empathize with them they are just children who had to grow up in a messed up system. And people are either raised being lied to, or their parents were way to honest that it evolved into cruelty.

It was quite a ride as a movie. Two people in their own bubbles, maybe narcissistic people. One won’t listen, the other one won’t see. At the end they are willing to listen, and therefore, speak. But it’s basically part of the bad parenting that exists nowadays. Specially in USA/Canada. Mexico is a lot different, doesn’t mean there are no bubbles. But USA is too shallow.
Even that mom that doesn’t want his kid to go to college. Damn, that hurt really bad. It was just sad, the nerve of that woman to take his son life and make him into believe he wants that life with his dad whom is an abuser. It’s really sad and fckd up

As the mother of a 14 year old boy, I can tell this movie is going to be amazing. I cried just from the trailer. I love how this is going to be from both the mom's perspective and the son's. I am an idealist and I raised my son to be one of the one's who defied the odds and used compassion to change the world. His behavior as a young child led me to create expectations. However, my teenager helped me to see that those types of expectations aren't empowering, they are crushing for him and for me. I've learned to see the things he is doing are beautiful and impactful--just in a different way than I expected. And that who I thought he was at age 6 is not who he is at age 14 and it won't be who he is at age 20. I needed to let go of the expectations and just love him unconditionally and provide advice when I have something helpful to say. And most importantly realize that I'm still changing too. The best scene in this trailer is when the mother is telling her son in the car what she had thought he was going to be, but he isn't that at all, and he says "sorry about that." He says it so genuinely it reminded me of my son. He wants to make me proud so much, but without meaning to, I was expecting near perfection.
And I also relate to what the mom sees in her job. I did absolutely incredible, compassionate, life-changing things when I was a kid and a teen. But I understand now that it was because my childhood was very traumatic. My children have safe, supportive lives. So instead of focusing on how to save people and save themselves, they get to focus on exploring themselves and the world and being creative. Its amazing when some people rise to the occasion in a horrible situation and become incredible human beings that change the world. But I wouldn't wish those horrible situations on to anyone even if great things come from it. I'm glad that my children get to feel safe enough in their lives that they spend their weekends playing instead of starting groups to rescue the down-trodden like I did. I did that because I wanted to be saved and I didn't know how to do that. I want my kids to also be compassionate, so we volunteer together and have discussions about psychology and sociology.

I feel like watching this movie will hurt me because I was that age once and thought I knew everything (well I didn't know everything) and now I am older I feel like I can understand both their povs. My parents really shielded me a lot and they didn't let me do anything outside of school. I resent them so much for this because I feel like I could have done a lot given the time and energy I had. Looking back I don't think I have anything interesting that happened during my teenage years.

@Sick Sick Sick the single biggest influence on a person's brain is their teenage years. It is the formative period where your brain consolidates into who you will be for the rest of your life. It's called brain plasticity. Neuroscientists have extensive research on this. The people who raise you, the people who defined what being a human to you is when you knew nothing as a baby and as you developed as a teen, obviously play a big part in your adulthood. This is common sense.

@Elin Felicia I get you. Where my classmates probably were mentally in their first year of highschool was who I was as a freshman in college, because of how sheltered I was by my parents. I went to a religious fundamentalist school with the same 10 people for 7 years. I was fucked in terms of maturity/identity because it was literally erased out of me.
You can't control the way you were raised, none of us choose it. You just have to get free any way you can, as fast as you can, so you can finally start growing up. It's OK if it's in your 20's, you'll get there someday. I did, eventually.

A line from a movie really stuck with me and sort of hits on this. "A man who has not prepared his children for his own death has failed as a father." Parents often want to shield their kids from all harms, not just to keep them from experiencing hurt or discomfort, but also to avoid dealing with those things as a parent, feeling helpless or sadness. But what your comment shows, this resentment, is a huge harm stuck in blind spot for many parents. It's important to push your kids out of their and your comfort zone, so their horizons can broaden, so they can be capable adults that don't need you.

@Elin Felicia I will let you in on a secret, making new friends is pretty difficult for everyone regardless of age (school is the only place its super easy)
best thing to do is be active in groups, try all kinds of clubs or sports or volunteer group or training courses or whatever. Try all kinds of things, if you don't like the thing don't go back. When you do find something you are passionate about or enjoy then the like minded people you meet there have a real good shot at becoming real friends

Nobody said teens make the best decisions. But they definitely have their moments of wisdom. As a parent, you need to be able to trust your kid, not smother them and dictate their life. The best thing you can do for your kid is to gradually let go of control as they grow. They need freedom to explore as teens, and of course you need to keep an eye out for their safety and well-being, but it's also important to start letting them make their own decisions. It prepares them for adulthood and independence. The beauty of having a child is watching them develop into who they are over the years.

Well, Maybe You (that's singular btw. Lol); maybe You can Explain the Purpose and the Point Behind uncut gems..? 😐🙌
I dunno.. ...why the Script and the Story would make one... I dunno - feel like they were soaring on the wings of eagles (or hawks)
In All Sincerity Both Are Majestic.
But; while I'm open to having my mind changed, the script and story of Gems is (thus far) not and is further uninspired...
Sure. Definitely. Dont watch it. As You say. With that just now being said however, why settle for garnish when there's a round meal right next to it on the same table ..(?) ... 😐

@drumbum3.14 if "your" going to confuse "they're" and "their" then dont try to use flowery language. "then don't watch them" is the most smoothbrained response you can make to someone criticising media you like. there is no component of such a response that "champions intelligence" and i shouldn't have to explain why. how many aneurysms did you have in the past year? how many times did you hit your head with a heavy object in the past day?

Thank you A24 for being such a reliable and consistent group of storytellers. Anytime I see that logo I know I’m in for a movie that does more than speak words and flash images. I’ve always respected Jesse Eisenberg as an actor but this looks to be where his true talent lies. This is the type of role I want to see Finn Wolfhard in, he’s a talented musician and a decent actor when he has good material and this looks like the perfect role to show the world that he’s more than Mike from Stranger Things. This trailer gave me chills and is totally relatable as I had a similar relationship with my father. Can’t wait to see this and more from A24

A24 IS the best in the game right now honestly! I love this film studio so much; the direction of projects, the actors, the actresses, directors, writers, stylists, set producers, music supervisors-all of you are so great! If you could get a “feel-good” feeling from a movie, even if the premise is a bit melancholy, just the thought of knowing that you just came from watching a beautiful, well-executed movie should be enough to gain the support of the masses. 🫶🏾
