This was excellent, have to agree with Middlemarch being an excellent book. I really need to get around to picking up and reading my Landmark Herodotus... Had I lumped all of Shakespeare together, he probably would have cracked my Top 5.

I've really enjoyed this book, it's been a fun ride. Political thrillers aren't normally my thing but this has been very engaging. I have managed to get a copy of the film that I'll watch when finished. I'll be interested to see how well it was adapted for the screen.

A very fine summary. I haven;t read the book or seen the movie, but I do recall it caused a fuss at the time it came out, but was a bit overshadowed by Dr. Strangelove. Based on your summary the authors did a good job developing a plausible story of a military plot. However, in reality, the President as Commander in Chief, could simply have cancelled the exercise for a made up reason or no reason at all and fired some or all of the suspected leaders of the coup. He didn't need proof though he might like to have had some. Career military officers would not have followed orders from a fired Chairman of the Joint Chief's regardless of his popularity. Simply cancelling the exercise would have disrupted their plans. That said, it still sounds like a fine politic military thriller. I used to own the book, but it vanished many years ago.

Not nerve-wracking at all, of course, in the present time. It was a lot more thoughtful and less action-oriented than I would have expected from the premise. The attitudes of the time permeate certain parts of the story.

Value is in the heart of the holder. I have a scruffy little '70's paperback that likely no one would give me a coin for but I love that thing. It holds memories like photographs do and the smells of youthful spring breakfasts which I can reminisce over every time I see it on my shelf. There are other books I dearly love but would part with only if I was offered a decent amount of money for them to justify the transaction to myself, and so I keep them. Somehow I feel a person is not worthy of these if it seems they don't value them as much as I do, so should stay with me. Some books I've enjoyed but I know I can part with (esp. if I'm not fussed on an edition or can easily buy it again), whether that be gifting it or loaning it to someone who likely won't return it (I have to be ok about it possibly being gone forever to lend a book). I can take them to a shop and accept they might offer me a mere penny for them if anything at all. Pennies are not better than finding someone to enjoy reading them but better than nothing. Then there are the books that just don't interest me when I look at them. I value them not. I'd be happy to throw a few away, or dump them at a charity store which I've done more than try to sell them. It intrigues me that I've only recently discovered I can take the box to an exchange store first, on route to a charity and sometimes get a nice dollar for the boxful of books, each of which are not worth a penny to me.

Refugia Faith sounds interesting. As one who lives in a deeply red so-called Christian area, I agree with you 100%. I see it has been out since Feb. so I am debating on ordering it. I've totally lost my interest in Christianity due to these people. Crazy!

I dedicate a lot of time to reading-though not as fast as you, so I can get behind what you’re saying, mostly. On my channel when I tell people it was a chore to read War and Peace for a full three or four days, even that feels provocative. I never thought about how it universalized the reading experiencing with others working on it as well. I really like that mode of thinking.

So sorry to hear of your experience today. It reminds me of "You've got Mail" where the little bookshop is closing. We need to keep buying books in bricks and mortar stores if we want to be able to walk into a shop and hold books in our hands before we purchase, and have that serendipitous discovery.

I really think it's ebooks what don' her in! I'm convinced that readers are still a thriving minority, but that those who take it seriously have migrated mostly to 1's and 0's, and because of the cost of ebooks, probably pirating more than buying. B&N's is a glorious holdout still in Corpus Christi, but surely its days are numbered.

@Anne P Well all the ebooks I own are independent of platform and on Calibre, backed up to multiple locations. The only way that I would not be able to use and convert them for the rest of my life is if all technologies somehow ceased to exists in a weird digital apocalypse. You're much more in danger of future fascist regimes burning your physical copies than I am of somehow losing the ability to read my ebooks.

You are the man I want to be. My main stumbling block is laziness, but I have distractions too. Granted there are other activities in life that are worthwhile, such as food prep which you alluded to, and equally component to a well-lived life. I'm halfway through book 4 of _The Plum in the Golden Vase_ which is fast becoming my favorite "mammoth", but also has made me aware of the benefits of rereading, something I seldom do and never have done with a mammoth. How will I receive _Don Quijote_ thirty years later? My only regret with _Plum_ is I didn't get an ebook. These paperbacks fall apart on the first reading (shame on you, Princeton) and I've been exceptionally careful. A Penguin deluxe edition would be nice; most of the notes are unnecessary.

Just heard this news about a new bookstore coming to Boston: Beacon Hill Books and Cafe, a new 3,000 square foot, four-story bookstore on Charles Street, will open in Boston in August. Owner Melissa Fetter plans to sell books in a range of topics spread across all of those stories. Events will be held in the cafe, courtyard garden, and third floor, where there’s a salon for intimate readings.

@Hannah's Books Nope! But the description fits the 21st century pattern: a pretty new retail bookstore opens, with a friendly staff and a lively events schedule - but with an iron hand of moral judgement. I hate that hand (because it would be equally happy - maybe moreso - throwing books onto a fire), and I sense it here. Maybe I'll be wrong.

Yes, but one of the things I liked about big impersonal chains was their relative lack of curatorial censorship. If Melissa Fetter doesn't think there are good and bad books (and especially good and bad readers), I'm the Czar of All the Russias.

I came back to watch the whole video since I came in near the end. I would totally volunteer for a LOTR Readalong if you think having a female in the Fellowship is appropriate. 😯 Not sure who I would be since Mad Madame Mim is in a whole different story. LOL! I do have a lot on my plate, but I'm a huge LOTR fan. I almost failed my student teaching when I kept reading it through my lunch period instead of getting my lesson plans done. I think I've read it every decade since then.

No large retail book stores at all. It was probably going to happen in this decade, but the pandemic undoubtedly moved the closing up by several years.

I worked for B&N for almost 15 years. My local B&N closed last year and was replaced by a liquor store. It’s heartbreaking.

No pressure on any other top 20's videos Steve! I was just curious of your top 20 biographies. I wonder how many of them that I have and what others I might need. 😃. Again awesome surprise stream. Always a treat.

This makes me even more grateful to have B&Ns here, even if it means I have to ride the NYC subway.

I'm sorry the B/N is closing. I live an hour drive from from our closest large bookstore. First the Borders closed and I was so heartbroken but then a year or so later a Books-A-Million came in to take its place. It's not as nice as Borders but I am glad they are there for sure! I can't imagine not having a big bookstore to get lost in. I've never been in a B/N.

Hi Steve! This would have been a great discussion on a SteveNinjaStream. With or without pants.
